The Apprentice Training NZ (ATNZ), Electrical Training Company (ETCO), New Zealand Steel Apprentice of the Year Awards evening was held on 16 February 2006 in Waiuku.
Guest speaker, well known Olympic Gold Medallist, Ian Ferguson shared his personal journey to success with the group. Ian encouraged the apprentices to always believe in themselves and set themselves goals to achieve each week.
Bob Pullein, VP Primary Operations announced Tom Thumath as the 2005 Apprentice of the Year.
With a strong commitment to his apprenticeship, Tom is proactive in the work place and well respected by both his workmates and managers. He has demonstrated a strong work ethic with his studies and a desire to progress his education by studying for a Diploma in Engineering (level 6 qualification).
Tom is also a recipient of the Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarship Award which he won over strong competition from apprentices nationwide.
The top apprentice at New Zealand Steel is selected each year for their outstanding aptitude in all aspects of the trade, on and off the job. Judges commented that the decision this year was difficult due to the very high standard of the apprentices.
