Steltech Structural Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of New Zealand Steel, has introduced welded beam technology into New Zealand. The objectives were to provide entirely locally manufactured structural members, and to increase the competitiveness and efficiency of steel generally as a construction material. Steltech’s Total Quality Management systems are designed to provide products and services, which satisfy our customer’s present and future needs.
The availability of welded members increases the ability of the engineer to design a wider range of structures than is currently possible with hot rolled steel members.
| Feature | Benefit |
| Manufactured from high strength Grade 300MOD steel | Permits greater section capacities for a given member |
| Tapered and haunched members with optimised web and flange dimensions | Achieves significant weight savings and cost efficiency, and increases spanning capability |
| Manufactured to length and shape | Reduced wastage and fabrication costs, and increased cost efficiency |
| Ability to create curved, cambered and castellated members | Permits new architectural features |
| Increased thickness of flange and/or web above design requirements | Increases the unprotected fire rating of the steel |
| Manufactured in New Zealand | Permits short lead times |
| Fine tuning of section properties by adjusting flange and/or web dimensions | Increases cost efficiency |
| Non-availability of imported steel members | Emergency situations are efficiently handled |
