Environmental Impact of Products of New Zealand Steel

Roof Run-Off

Roof run-off is the term used to refer to run-off water from installed roofing materials. Run-off water, which usually ends up in the stormwater system, also comes from roads and other drained areas, and may contain contaminants such as zinc compounds. New Zealand Steel’s roofing materials such as ZINCALUME® coated steel and COLORSTEEL® range of prepainted steel products minimise the occurrence of zinc in roof run-off in stormwater.

New Zealand Steel is actively working to ensure good quality research is conducted into the sources and environmental effects of zinc in waterways, and ensuring misconceptions are corrected through market education. For more information please select the following link:

Reflectance

Reflectance is the term used to describe the ratio of reflected light to the total amount of light falling on the surface. A highly reflective surface will have a high Reflectance Value. Reflectance has been used by some Territorial Authorities when considering Resource Consent applications as a prediction of the amount of Glare which might arise from a new roof.

Glare depends on a range of factors including the type of roof coating, type of roof profile, slope of the roof, viewing position, angle of the sun, time of year, time of day, and prevailing weather conditions. The simple measure of Reflectance is not a reliable predictor of Glare, and therefore New Zealand Steel discourages the use of Reflectance Values as a proxy for glare in building design and resource consent decisions.
