On 24 August 2009, New Zealand Steel was granted Resource Consent for operation of a new landfill site on its property in Glenbrook Beach Road. Following the consent for the operation of a new landfill a Community Liaison Group was established to:
The group is made up of representatives from the; Glenbrook Irrigation Company, Glenbrook Beach Residents & Ratepayers Association, Glenbrook Concerned Residents Inc., Glenbrook War Memorial Committee and Residents & Ratepayers Association, Glenbrook School Board of Trustees, Waiuku Business Development Association, Ngaati Te Ata, Ngati Tamaho, Franklin District Council and Auckland Regional Council.
This group is in addition to the Environment Committee that was established in the 1970’s as a forum for the community and company to discuss environmental issues arising from the steel mill operations.
This committee meets every four months to review NZ Steel’s environmental performance and discuss any major projects. The committee has representation from the ARC – Auckland Regional Council, FDC – Franklin District Council, Local Iwi, Glenbrook Irrigation Company, Auckland Public Health Service, Federated Farmers and NZ Steel Senior Managers and Environmental staff.
