We're taking action on climate change
With its strength, durability and recyclability, steel is one of the most useful and in-demand materials in the world and a critical foundation for sustainable economic development and the transition to a low carbon society.
Goals & Targets
Our goal is to pursue net zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions as part of the BlueScope business by 2050
- Achieving the 2050 net zero goal is highly dependent on several enablers of steel decarbonisation
- Measured against a FY2018 baseline.
- The non-steelmaking target applies to our midstream activities that include our cold rolled, metal coating, painting lines and long products. It excludes our downstream activities. Measured against a FY2018 baseline.
- 12% GHG emissions intensity reduction for steelmaking activities by 2030
- 30% GHG emissions intensity reduction for non-steelmaking activities by 2030
Decarbonisation & the EAF
We are working on New Zealand’s largest single site decarbonisation project as part of our larger decarbonisation goals; the construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF)
Our new EAF will replace the existing steelmaking process, whilst retaining approximately half of the ironmaking capacity at the plant. The EAF will be fed by a combination of large amounts of scrap and consume less than half of the iron used today.
The site's Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions are expected to reduce by up to 55 per cent, reducing site emissions by up to 1Mt of CO2-eq and New Zealand's overall national emissions by one per cent
Our commitment to the EAF project is made possible by local supply of domestic scrap steel and electricity from a large renewable grid, together with co-investment and durable policy settings from the New Zealand Government.
